AI can build you a deck in seconds. So why does PowerPoint still win?

Ask anyone in a large organisation whether they've tried an AI presentation tool lately, and the answer is almost certainly yes. Copilot, Gamma, Beautiful.ai, there's no shortage of tools promising to turn a rough idea into a polished deck in minutes.

So it's a fair question: with all this AI around, are people still using PowerPoint?

The short answer is yes, more than ever, in fact. But how they're using it has changed, and that shift says a lot about where the real value in presentation design now sits.

PowerPoint isn't going anywhere

Despite the wave of AI, PowerPoint remains the default in corporate environments. It's deeply embedded in company systems, in client expectations, in the muscle memory of every team from HR to the boardroom. Business professionals and consultants overwhelmingly still need PowerPoint compatibility and formatting precision, because their deliverables almost always end up back in PowerPoint one way or another.

That's not stubbornness. It's practicality. When your brand guidelines, your templates, your export requirements, and your audience's expectations are all built around PowerPoint, switching the whole organisation to something else is a much bigger ask than switching tools for a single deck.

The real change: AI is moving inside PowerPoint, not replacing it

The interesting story isn't "PowerPoint vs AI." It's AI becoming part of the PowerPoint workflow itself.

Microsoft's own Copilot can now generate slides, suggest redesigns, and even chain together multi-step tasks through its Agent Mode. Some large organisations have gone further still with one well-known consultancy reports that AI-generated presentations are now a daily habit for the majority of its tens of thousands of employees.

That's a meaningful change and worth thinking about further because in our experience, when we ask clients what they actually struggle with when putting a deck together, it's rarely the fonts or the colour palette. It's working out what goes where, and how to get the whole thing to flow like it's telling one clear story. That's the part that always takes the most time and headspace, and it's exactly where AI is starting to genuinely help.

Where AI-native tools run into trouble

Standalone AI presentation tools have their place because they're fast, and for a quick internal update or a first draft, that speed is genuinely useful. But for anything client-facing or high-stakes, they tend to show their limitations quickly:

  • Exports break. Text shifts, layouts shuffle, fonts disappear the moment a deck built elsewhere gets opened in PowerPoint, which eventually it will do.

  • They all start to look the same. AI-native decks tend to share a recognisable, slightly generic look and feel. Fine for a quick pitch. Not fine for a board presentation or a client meeting where your brand needs to feel unmistakably yours.

  • They don't know your brand. AI can organise content. It doesn't know your colour palette, your tone of voice, your logo usage rules, or the dozen small details that make a deck feel like it came from your company and not a template library.

So where does that leave design?

More relevant than ever, honestly.

If AI is going to take over the grunt work of the first draft, the structure, the "what goes where", then the one thing that actually differentiates a presentation is exactly the thing AI can't do well: making it unmistakably, consistently on-brand.

That's where a proper design foundation pays off. A well-built PowerPoint template, designed by people like us who understand your brand and know how to make PowerPoint sing, means that whether a slide starts life as an AI-generated first draft from scratch, it ends up in a system that keeps it consistent, professional, and instantly recognisable as yours.

AI can help your teams move fast but there is still, and increasingly, a job for human design.
