Is your PowerPoint template letting you down?

Your PowerPoint template used to be something people opened once and then worked around. With AI tools like Copilot now drafting slides for your team, it has quietly become one of your most important brand assets.

When Copilot builds a deck, it works within the template it's given. A strong template means every AI-generated draft starts on brand. A weak one means every draft needs fixing, often by someone who isn't a designer.

Why AI raises the stakes

Before AI, a poor template mostly slowed people down. Now it multiplies the problem:

  • More decks, made faster. When anyone can generate a 15-slide presentation in minutes, far more slides get made, and each one inherits your template's strengths and flaws.

  • Fewer designers in the loop. Many AI-drafted decks go straight from a colleague's laptop to a client or board.

  • AI follows rules, not instinct. Copilot uses the layouts, fonts and colours it finds. It won't fix a clumsy layout or guess at a missing one.

In short, your template is now the guardrail that keeps every presentation looking like it came from the same organisation.

What a well-built template includes

A good template is more than a title slide with a logo. The ones that work hardest for our clients include:

  • A full set of layouts. Title, section dividers, one and two columns, image-led slides, quotes, charts, tables, team pages and a closing slide. The more real situations you cover, the less people improvise.

  • Properly set-up placeholders. Text and image boxes built into the master, so content (whether typed or AI-generated) drops into the right place.

  • Defined theme colours and fonts. Brand colours and typefaces set in the theme, not applied by hand, so charts, tables and new slides pick them up automatically.

  • Clear, descriptive layout names. "Two column – image left" helps both people and AI pick the right layout. "Custom Layout 7" doesn't.

  • Chart and table styles. Pre-styled so data looks consistent without anyone reformatting it.

  • Accessibility built in. Strong colour contrast, sensible font sizes and a logical reading order.

  • A short guide. A few example slides showing how the template should be used.

Signs your template is holding you back

If any of these sound familiar, it may be time for a refresh:

  • Colleagues copy old decks rather than start from the template.

  • Logos, colours or fonts vary from one presentation to the next.

  • People drag text boxes around because the layouts don't fit their content.

  • Charts look different on every slide.

  • AI-generated drafts come out looking generic or off brand.

  • Your template still reflects a brand refresh from several years ago.

The bottom line for your PowerPoint template

AI has made it easier than ever to produce slides. That makes the foundation those slides are built on more important, not less. A well-built template is a one-off investment that pays off in every presentation your team makes, with or without Copilot.

SJ Creative Partners designs and builds PowerPoint templates that look great, work properly and keep your brand consistent.
